Media Nuggets: PHLY Responds to Age Discrimination Complaint, JAKIB Sports Axes a Show, Action News Musings

Introduction

I do a media notebook every few months that stems from conversation with about a dozen Crossing Broad sources. Sometimes there will be tidbits that aren’t enough for full posts, but they fit into this format instead. As we enter Q2 in 2024, here’s some of the stuff I was able to dig up, plus a few generic observations and musings that are worth sharing:

1) Age Discrimination Complaint against PHLY

All City Network, the parent company of PHLY, was named in an age discrimination filing with the state. A former seller, who sources say is in their sixties, was let go just a few months into their contract. CEO Brandon Spano denies any age-related termination.

2) New Writers at PHLY

PHLY has hired a couple of new writers who are Inquirer veterans. Ed Barkowitz and Les Bowen, who both took buyouts from the Inquirer, have joined the team.

3) JAKIB Media Axes Show after Payment Controversy

In response to the controversy surrounding late or non-payment of contributors, JAKIB Media has axed the Sports Take show hosted by Tone DeShields and Rob Ellis.

4) Rhea Hughes Gets New Contract

Rhea Hughes, a popular radio personality, has signed a new contract in the post-Angelo Cataldi era.

5) Departures and Reappearances at Action News

Monica Malpass and Renee Washington, both former employees of Action News, had abrupt departures and subsequent reappearances. The timeline for female sports talent at Action News has been unusual.

6) Jamie Apody Update

Updates on Jamie Apody’s employment status have been some of the most read stories on Crossing Broad in 2024.

7) Jon Marks Joins Parx

Jon Marks has partnered with Parx for a weekly live show called “Out of the Parx.”

8) No Update on Mike Missanelli

There is no new information on the possibility of Mike Missanelli returning to 97.5 to work middays.
