Modernisation of Athens Metro Line to Promote Sustainable Development Goals

The modernisation of Athens Metro Line is expected to significantly contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This project aims to extend the lifespan of trains by approximately 25 years, resulting in higher comfort and improved reliability for passengers. The enhanced train experience will encourage more individuals to switch from cars to the metro, leading to time and cost savings.

Environmental Benefits and Energy Savings

In addition to the positive impact on passenger experience, the modernisation project will also bring about various environmental benefits and energy savings. Athens can anticipate a reduction in air pollution and noise levels due to the upgraded trains. Furthermore, the project includes the upgrade of two energy recovery traction substations and the installation of an energy recovery system from electric braking, resulting in a 15% decrease in energy consumption.

Financial Investment and Cohesion Policy Contributions

The initial adoption phase of this project, which falls within the 2014–2020 funding period, sets the foundation for further investment during the 2021–2027 funding period. The total investment for this project is estimated to exceed €94 million, demonstrating a substantial commitment towards sustainable development.

This support from the Cohesion Policy complements other contributions towards upgrading the Athens metro line. In October 2022, the extension of metro line 3 to the Piraeus port was inaugurated, with a financial support of €470 million from the Cohesion Fund. These investments showcase the European Union’s dedication to promoting sustainable transportation infrastructure.
