A Deer Park man, Gene Goss, is seeking help after a car crash damaged his wheelchair-accessible van, leaving him confined to his home for the past ten days. This unfortunate incident has significantly impacted his life and limited his ability to work, attend appointments, and visit friends and family. As a survivor of a spinal cord injury, Goss relies heavily on accessible transportation to maintain his independence.
Goss expressed his frustration, stating, “My van is my everything. It really does halt your life and you’re stuck.” The lack of accessible transportation has not only affected his mobility but has also had a negative impact on his income. Goss emphasized the importance of being around people and shared how being confined at home has affected his mental health.
Despite having coverage to assist with the damages, Goss discovered that his coverage had expired just before the accident occurred. In a desperate attempt to find a solution, he turned to strangers for help by creating a GoFundMe campaign. Within nine days, he has managed to raise over $5,500, which is only $2,000 short of his goal.
Goss expressed his gratitude and shock at the overwhelming support he has received, saying, “I started seeing the donations come in from people all over the community – workmates, friends, family, old schoolmates. It’s really given me some hope and is getting me out of a little funk that I’m in.”
While the financial contributions have been a blessing, Goss emphasized that the kindness shown by individuals has meant even more to him. He appreciates that people have taken the time to read his story and consider supporting him.
