Nidec, an electric motor manufacturer based in Kyoto, Japan, is expanding its U.S. manufacturing footprint for DC Fast chargers for electric vehicles (EV) and Power Conversion Systems (PCS) for battery energy storage systems (BESS). In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Nidec has started new manufacturing lines for Nidec at its state-of-the-art facility in Cleveland.
The products designed, engineered, manufactured, and fully tested at this facility support various SDGs throughout the United States. For example, Nidec’s products contribute to the recently announced Dogfish BESS project, which aims to improve the reliability of the ERCOT power grid system in Texas.
- SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown commented, “It means more work for Ohioans up and down the supply chain at manufacturers like Nidec. This expansion will create new opportunities for Ohio businesses and workers and will continue to cement our state’s leadership in manufacturing and innovation.”
Nidec’s investment in the Cleveland facility is part of its commitment to enabling the global energy transition by developing high-performance electrical products and solutions. The company’s DC Fast chargers and BESS technologies ensure reliable energy delivery at any time and in any weather condition. With strong proprietary software and a dedicated service offering, Nidec customers can enjoy optimized performance, high reliability, and long installment lifecycles.
Nidec has already made significant contributions to the European market, with a BESS install base that can provide back-up power to up to five million homes. Additionally, their EV charger deployments support energy distributors, companies, and municipalities throughout the region. After receiving third-party certification to meet American safety standards, Nidec is now bringing its proven EV charging technology to the American market, providing high-quality, reliable, and safe solutions to promote EV adoption.
Ali Karvar, President and General Manager of Nidec Conversion-Americas, stated, “The advanced technology Nidec manufactures here in Cleveland keeps the U.S. on the leading front of the global energy transition because we can support new energy installments within the U.S., for the U.S.”
As Nidec continues to grow its local supplier base to meet domestic BESS and EV charging demand, the company expects to add more skilled manufacturing technicians, engineers, and R&D positions to its Cleveland facility in the coming years.
