Investigation into Russia’s Appropriation of Ukrainian Agricultural Products
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into Russia’s appropriation of over 1,700 tonnes of Ukrainian agricultural products. This issue is a significant violation of international trade laws and directly impacts Ukraine’s economy and food security.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Impacted:
- Goal 2: Zero Hunger
- Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has stolen and destroyed billions of U.S. dollars worth of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products. The Prosecutor General’s Office has identified more than 1,700 tonnes of agricultural products illegally exported from the temporarily occupied territories. Additionally, there has been significant damage to agricultural infrastructure due to shelling and hostilities.
Russia has been systematically exporting stolen products abroad and selling them on the world market while concealing their origin. This illegal activity undermines fair trade practices and violates international agreements.
During the Ukrainian Grain Conference in Kyiv, Deputy Prosecutor General Dmytro Verbytskyi reported that Ukrainian prosecutors have obtained arrest warrants for more than 20 vessels, sent requests for mutual legal assistance, and submitted 20 indictments to court.
However, the investigation is facing challenges as Russia continues to hide the Ukrainian origin of agricultural products. The necessary documents and witnesses are located in the temporarily occupied territories or in Russia itself, making it difficult to gather evidence.
“Therefore, the Prosecutor General’s Office is calling on international partners, agro-traders, and public organizations to assist in tracking the international flow of stolen Ukrainian agricultural products and preventing the financing of these illegal sales,” the agency emphasized.
