The South Arkansas Arts Center Welcomes Local Arts in Education Showcase
Introduction
The South Arkansas Arts Center is pleased to announce the arrival of the local Arts in Education (AIE) showcase, which will be held in the Merkle and Price Galleries from April 1st to April 26th. This event aims to highlight the importance of arts education in our community and celebrate the artistic achievements of local students. The showcase will feature exhibits from El Dorado High School and various elementary schools, with a special focus on promoting cultural diversity and creativity.
El Dorado High School Exhibit: “Cultural Connections”
The Merkle Gallery will host the El Dorado High School exhibit titled “Cultural Connections.” This collaborative effort involves students from grades 9-12, who are enrolled in Visual Art 1 and Art Appreciation classes. Led by their art teacher, Katie Harwell, and supported by AIE artists Jorge Villegas, Maria Botti Villegas, and Lisa Burton Tarver, the students have created art projects that celebrate both local and distant cultures. The mediums used include quilting, paper collage, watercolors, pen and ink illustrations, and dark room photography.
Elementary Student Art Exhibits: “A Pine Tree Christmas” and “Shoot for the Moon”
The Price Gallery will be dedicated to showcasing the artistic talents of elementary school students. The exhibit “A Pine Tree Christmas” is a project led by AIE artist Lisa Burton Tarver, with assistance from award-winning filmmakers Alexander Jeffery and Paul Peterson of Bespoke Video. Students from Northwest Elementary, Yocum Elementary, and Hugh Goodwin Elementary participated in this project, creating 3D Christmas tree collages using photos of pine trees, leaves, and berries. The exhibit will include a video documenting the project, as well as student classroom photos and a 3D Christmas tree similar to the ones made by the students.
In addition, the Price Gallery will feature the exhibit “Shoot for the Moon,” which resulted from a space shuttle and eclipse project with 4th graders at Yocum Elementary. AIE artist Mike Means led this project, which involved creating a over 6-foot tall, 3-dimensional model of a space shuttle, as well as drawings and pictures of eclipse-viewing boxes made by the students.
Reception and Contact Information
A reception will be held on Tuesday, April 16th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm to honor the students and their teachers. This event will provide an opportunity for the community to appreciate the students’ artistic achievements and recognize the importance of arts education.
