Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Future of Electric Cars

Introduction

Electric cars are considered the future of transportation, but there are still several challenges that hinder their widespread adoption. Issues such as limited range, heavy and expensive batteries, and slow charging times have deterred many potential buyers. However, various companies claim to have the technology to overcome these obstacles and revolutionize the electric car industry.

The Promise of Solid State Batteries

Toyota, along with other automakers like Stellantis, Hyundai, and Volkswagen, is working on a breakthrough technology known as “solid state batteries.” Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, solid state batteries utilize solid electrolytes. This difference makes solid state batteries potentially safer, smaller, lighter, and more powerful. They also have a lower risk of catching fire in the event of a crash.

Challenges and Alternatives

While solid state batteries hold great promise, they face their own set of challenges. One major obstacle is the economic production of these advanced batteries on a large scale to make electric cars affordable. Additionally, there are competing battery technologies with established manufacturing techniques.

Other companies are exploring alternative strategies to achieve lighter, cheaper, and faster-charging electric vehicles. For example, OneD Battery Sciences proposes adding silicone to traditional liquid-electrolyte batteries to improve performance at a relatively low cost. Some companies are also developing semi-solid state batteries that combine elements of both solid state and liquid-electrolyte designs.

Considerations for the Future

It is unlikely that a single battery technology will dominate the electric vehicle market. Different types of batteries will be matched to specific vehicles and markets. General Motors, for instance, designed its Ultium electric vehicle platform to accommodate various battery technologies. The goal is to have multiple solutions that can coexist within the same engineering framework.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  1. SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – Electric cars powered by sustainable energy sources contribute to the goal of affordable and clean energy.
  2. SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Advancements in battery technology drive innovation in the automotive industry and support infrastructure development for electric vehicles.
  3. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Electric cars help reduce air pollution and promote sustainable transportation in urban areas.
  4. SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – The development of more efficient and environmentally friendly batteries aligns with responsible consumption and production practices.
  5. SDG 13: Climate Action – Electric cars play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.
