Israeli Start-Up CropX Collaborates with Syngenta to Improve Sustainability in Seed Production

Israeli start-up company CropX Technologies, a global leader in digital farm management, and Syngenta, a global leader in agricultural seeds and crop protection products, are collaborating to improve sustainability and production efficiency of Syngenta’s seed suppliers in the Midwestern United States. Syngenta is one of the largest seed manufacturers globally, supplying seeds to millions of farmers worldwide.

Enhancing Sustainability through Collaboration

Gilber Arjenta, Head of Seed Production and Supply Chain at Syngenta in North America, stated: “Syngenta is committed to enhancing the sustainability of our seed supply chain. Last year, we conducted a comparative trial of soil data monitoring systems in corn fields in Nebraska and Illinois, and the CropX system demonstrated the best performance”.

Improving Sustainability and Production Efficiency

According to Syngenta, the CropX system helped improve sustainability by reducing irrigation water usage, which enhanced the return on investment. Since the trial, the company decided to expand the use of the CropX system to additional corn growing areas in the Midwest.

Optimizing Irrigation and Preserving Yields

Gilber Argenta continued: “We chose CropX because its excellent hardware and software technology allowed us to optimize irrigation and preserve our yields. The system, which provides real-time data, visualization tools, and insights, enables us to proactively manage our water resources. It allowed us to put our finger on the pulse of our fields and ultimately improve the health of our crops”.

A Win-Win Solution for Farmers and the Environment

Tomer Tzach, CEO of CropX, expressed his pride in being chosen as Syngenta’s sustainability solution. CropX’s solution creates a win-win situation for both farmers and the environment by enabling them to increase yields while reducing required inputs such as water and fungicide chemicals. The system provides field managers with comprehensive field insights and simplifies agricultural management on large plots.

Data-Driven Insights for Sustainable Farming

CropX offers a solution that combines software and hardware and provides data-driven insights to farmers in over 60 countries. CropX’s technology helps farmers increase yields while significantly saving resources: less water, less fertilizer, fewer chemicals, less energy, and fewer labor resources. The CropX system fully supports 75 different types of crops, integrates data from sensors in the ground, weather stations, rainfall data, and agronomic knowledge, and provides decision-making tools and planning – all offered through a user-friendly application that allows for managing multiple fields simultaneously.

Continued Growth and Expansion

CropX completed a Series C funding round in April with a total of $30 million to continue its impressive growth and fund additional acquisitions. The company is implementing a “Buy and Build” strategy focused on precision agriculture technologies. It combines an aggressive M&A plan with the acquisition of companies with complementary expertise and diverse geographical and technological backgrounds.

SDGs, Targets, and Indicators

  1. SDG 2: Zero Hunger

    • Target 2.4: By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding, and other disasters, and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
    • Indicator: The use of the CropX system to optimize irrigation and preserve yields, resulting in improved health of crops and reduced water usage.
  2. SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

    • Target 6.4: By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.
    • Indicator: The use of the CropX system to reduce irrigation water usage, leading to improved sustainability and enhanced return on investment.
  3. SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

    • Target 12.2: By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
    • Indicator: The use of the CropX system to save resources such as water, fertilizer, chemicals, energy, and labor resources by providing data-driven insights to farmers.
