The Literacy Project has recently appointed Marion Martin as the new leader for the organization’s Adult Literacy sector. Martin, who relocated to Eagle County from Pennsylvania, brings extensive experience in education and language development.

Background and Motivation

Having worked with English learners throughout her entire career, Martin is committed to supporting and empowering students through language development. Her passion for education and her desire to make a difference led her to join The Literacy Project.

After her husband retired in 2021, Martin and her husband explored potential places to settle in the west. With their strong connections in Colorado, including their two sons and longtime friends, the decision to relocate to Eagle County was an easy one. They are delighted to call this friendly and picturesque community their new home, which offers countless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Expanding Opportunities for English Learners

In her new role at The Literacy Project, Martin aims to expand opportunities for English learners to access tutoring and classes in the area. She also plans to provide resources and information to assist the organization’s dedicated volunteer tutors in their efforts.

Down Valley Adult English Language Development Classes

The Literacy Project, with Martin on board, will be adding two more adult English language development classes at the Eagle and Gypsum libraries. The sessions in Eagle will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, while the Gypsum classes will be held on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.

Martin emphasizes that the objective is to address the language needs of the communities down valley and ensure accessibility to English Language Development (ELD) classes for all. Fostering literacy and language skills is crucial for personal growth and success. These skills empower individuals by enhancing communication and creating a sense of belonging and connection within communities, providing the tools needed to navigate and thrive.

Adult Literacy Classes

In addition to the English language development classes, The Literacy Project also offers adult literacy classes at the Avon Library on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m., and at the Eagle Library on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. These classes cater to adult English speakers who read below an eighth-grade level. The practical goals of participants may include obtaining a job, earning a driver’s license, or helping their children with homework. Some may have long-term goals of pursuing a high school equivalency degree.

Martin expresses her excitement about collaborating with the dedicated tutors and students as they progress through their educational journeys. For more information, visit The Literacy Project’s website.
