Virginia Tech Receives $80 Million Grant to Promote Climate-Smart Agriculture
BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia Tech has been awarded a record $80 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to support farmers in implementing climate-safe practices that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Implementing Climate-Smart Practices for Sustainable Development
The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, in collaboration with the Alliance to Advance Climate-Smart Agriculture, will allocate over $57 million of the grant towards a program that incentivizes farmers of all sizes to adopt climate-smart practices. The aim is to have a substantial impact on mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Under this program, farmers will receive $100 per acre or animal for voluntarily adopting climate-smart practices that generate more environmental benefits than the amount received.
Testing the Program on a National Scale
Virginia, along with Arkansas, Minnesota, and North Dakota, will pilot the implementation of a similar program on a national level. If successful, this program has the potential to help agricultural producers reduce their emissions by 55% and contribute to an 8-10% reduction in total emissions across the country.
Ensuring Inclusivity and Environmental Benefits
Virginia Tech researchers will develop a model to select participants that ensures the program reaches a wide range of farmers and producers, making it accessible and impactful. In addition to environmental benefits, the program also aims to enhance agricultural production to meet the needs of the growing global population.
Evaluating Environmental Impacts and Consumer Preferences
Furthermore, Virginia Tech will play a crucial role in tracking the greenhouse gas savings resulting from the program’s implementation. The university will evaluate other environmental impacts, such as reduced soil emissions, and assess consumers’ willingness to pay for climate-smart products.
