Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Ageism

Introduction

I accidentally went to Shoppers Drug Mart on Seniors’ Thursday. It’s something I try to avoid because, even though I believe ageism is a pervasive and insidious prejudice, I become an ageist on Seniors’ Thursday. It’s hard not to, witnessing the behaviour of some three-quarter lifers.

Observation at Shoppers Drug Mart

On my accidental Shoppers visit, a stylish woman my age stood line-adjacent to me and my cart of half-a-dozen items. I was next up at the cash; there were a lot of people behind me.

The Impact of Ageism on Sustainable Development Goals

Ageism, the discrimination and stereotyping based on age, is a barrier to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015, aiming to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change by 2030.

Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

Ageism perpetuates inequalities among different age groups, particularly towards older adults. This hinders progress towards Goal 10 of the SDGs, which focuses on reducing inequalities within and among countries.

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being

Ageism can also impact access to healthcare and well-being for older adults. Goal 3 of the SDGs aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Ageism undermines efforts to achieve this goal by limiting older adults’ access to quality healthcare and support services.

Goal 5: Gender Equality

Ageism intersects with gender inequality, particularly affecting older women. Goal 5 of the SDGs seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Ageism can exacerbate gender disparities among older women, limiting their opportunities and rights.

Conclusion

Addressing ageism is crucial for achieving the SDGs and creating a more inclusive and equitable society. By challenging ageist attitudes and promoting intergenerational solidarity, we can work towards a sustainable future that leaves no one behind.
