Farming for Success Field Day

Now is the time to register for the Farming for Success field day.

Penn State Extension’s field and forage crop team will hold Farming for Success, an agronomic field day for farmers, industry representatives, and other agricultural professionals, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim.

This informative event will feature a wide range of crop production topics. Attendees can learn about current research and best management recommendations, considerations to promote high-yielding production systems, and herbicide programs and timings for best weed control.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Keynote

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding will deliver the morning keynote focusing on the Shapiro administration’s agricultural priorities and the 2023 federal Farm Bill.

Farmer Panel on Soil Health

After lunch, Jim Hershey, president of the Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance, will host a farmer panel of alliance members to discuss practices they use to increase soil health and achieve sustainable, high farm yields.

Tour Tracks

Participants can choose to attend two of the following three tour tracks:

  1. Tour 1

    • Tar spot research and management in corn
    • Alfalfa seeding and management
    • Soybean variety trials
  2. Tour 2

    • Nitrogen sidedress optimization in corn
    • Burcucumber management and control
    • Soybean seeding rates
    • Planting green
  3. Tour 3

    • Potential for double-crop sunflowers
    • Benefits of healthy streams for productive farming
    • Nutrient management to protect streams
    • Drones used for scouting, seeding, and spraying

Credits and Sponsors

Participants can earn four certified crop adviser credits, 1.5 Pennsylvania nutrient management points, and 1.5 Pennsylvania manure hauler/broker credits.

Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with sponsors from the chemical and seed industries, local equipment dealers, agricultural lenders, and crop production professionals.

The Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance, the Pennsylvania Soybean Board, and numerous local agricultural businesses are providing support for the field day.

Participants can register through 11:59 p.m. Aug. 20. The $10 registration fee covers a catered lunch.
