The James Valley Career and Technology Center Welcomes Students Back to School

Introduction

The James Valley Career and Technology Center is excited to welcome students from Jamestown High School, Montpelier, and Pingree-Buchanan back to school for the 2023-2024 school year. As we prepare for the new school year, we would like to express our gratitude for the dedicated support we receive from community members who value hands-on learning.

Class Offerings

Students from Jamestown, Montpelier, and Pingree-Buchanan have the opportunity to participate in various class offerings at the Career and Technology Center. These include Child Care, Health Careers, Construction Technology, Automotive Technology, Auto Collision Technology, Informational Technology, Precision Machining Technology, Agriculture Education, and Aviation.

NDCTE Grant

Last spring, the James Valley Career and Technology Center received a NDCTE grant to offer summer camps in the fields of Aviation and Automotive Technology. These camps aimed to expose students to career opportunities within these industries, which struggle to develop and maintain a workforce. The goals and objectives of the summer camps align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foundational standards within each program area. The camps are free for students and provide them with shirts, prizes, books, and journals.

Career Ready Practices

The JVCTC staff incorporates Career Ready Practices into their daily instruction. These practices encompass a range of workplace skills, with a particular emphasis on communication, collaboration, responsibility, critical thinking, and technical skills. Student growth in these areas is tracked through Power School, allowing parents and students to monitor areas requiring improvement. CTE also focuses on developing “soft skills” to help students transition to work environments that reflect the Career Ready Practices model.

Work Based Learning

This fall, the JVCTC has 26 students enrolled in Work Based Learning. However, local businesses still have the opportunity to host a student if they prefer. Work Based Learning students have already earned a minimum of 2 credits within their chosen field of study and have the chance to gain practical experience through on-site work opportunities provided by the JVCTC’s partnerships with local companies and agencies. By participating in these opportunities, students can earn either a ½ credit (75 hours) or 1 credit (150 hours), allowing them to gain exposure to work environments and expand their personal networks.

Contact Information

For more details about Work Based Learning opportunities, please contact Jerry Waagen, the JVCTC Work Based Learning Coordinator.

New Staff Member

We are pleased to welcome Walter Marinkovits as the new Machinist instructor at the JVCTC. Walter brings extensive experience in machining, welding, and small engines, having previously taught adult education in Pennsylvania. Although new to 9-12 Career and Technology Education, Walter’s skills will greatly benefit our students.

Additional Programs

In addition to our career and technological curricular offerings, the JVCTC also provides adult-basic and secondary education, general and vocational adult education, High School Completion (GED), Certified Nurse-Aide Skills Training, and Certified Nurse-Aide testing.
