Energy-Saving Trees Program Returns in Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s Energy-Saving Trees program will return with registration opening on April 12.
RIDEM is partnering with the Rhode Island Tree Council, the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association, and the Arbor Day Foundation to give away over 2,000 trees.
Participants will have the opportunity to reserve one tree that can be picked up at one of four tree pickup events, as well as one tree that will be mailed directly to their home.
The available tree species include paw paw, tree lilac, Kousa dogwood, Princeton elm, bald cypress, tulip tree, white flowering dogwood, eastern redbud, river birch, pin oak, sycamore, sugar maple, and black cherry.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Planting trees in neighborhoods improves the quality of life and provides shade to keep people cooler and healthier in hot weather.
- Goal 13: Climate Action – Planting trees in the right place can improve air quality, capture and store carbon, and help manage stormwater runoff.
More information on registration for the program can be found here.
SDGs, Targets, and Indicators
SDGs | Targets | Indicators |
---|---|---|
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities | 11.7 By 2030, provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces, in particular for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilities | – Number of trees planted in neighborhoods – Increase in the availability of shade in hot weather |
SDG 13: Climate Action | 13.2 Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning | – Number of trees planted to capture and store carbon – Improvement in air quality through tree planting |
SDG 15: Life on Land | 15.2 By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally | – Number of trees planted through afforestation and reforestation – Increase in forest cover |
1. Which SDGs are addressed or connected to the issues highlighted in the article?
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 15: Life on Land
The article discusses the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s Energy-Saving Trees program, which aims to provide trees to Rhode Islanders. Planting trees in neighborhoods contributes to creating greener and more sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). It also mentions the environmental benefits of tree planting, such as improving air quality, capturing and storing carbon, and managing stormwater runoff, which are relevant to climate action (SDG 13) and promoting sustainable management of forests (SDG 15).
2. What specific targets under those SDGs can be identified based on the article’s content?
- Target 11.7: By 2030, provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces, in particular for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilities
- Target 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
- Target 15.2: By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally
The Energy-Saving Trees program aligns with target 11.7 by promoting the planting of trees in neighborhoods to provide green spaces that are safe, inclusive, and accessible to all. It also supports target 13.2 by integrating climate change measures through tree planting and target 15.2 by promoting afforestation and reforestation efforts.
3. Are there any indicators mentioned or implied in the article that can be used to measure progress towards the identified targets?
- Number of trees planted in neighborhoods
- Increase in the availability of shade in hot weather
- Number of trees planted to capture and store carbon
- Improvement in air quality through tree planting
- Number of trees planted through afforestation and reforestation
- Increase in forest cover
The article mentions the number of trees being given away through the program, which can be used as an indicator to measure progress towards the targets. Additionally, the availability of shade in hot weather, the capture and storage of carbon, improvement in air quality, and the increase in forest cover are all indicators that can be used to assess the impact of tree planting efforts.
