The New Indian Literacy Programme aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, including:

  • Panchayat Union Primary School (PUPS) at Sugunapuram in Perur block
  • PUMS at Kondampalayam in Karamadai block

Impact of the Programme

Valarmathi, the Headmistress of PUPS in Sugunapuram, shared the impact of the programme. She stated, “We provided basic education in foundational literacy and numeracy to 50 individuals above 50 years of age through Ilam Thedi Kalvi volunteers. Additionally, our volunteers accompanied them to the post office and taught them how to fill out applications. Now, they are able to independently carry out their transactions.”

The selection of these schools was based on the evaluation of teaching methods by block-level officers. In the last academic year, the volunteers taught foundational literacy and numeracy, as well as life skills, to a total of 20,840 individuals across 1,225 schools that were converted into learning centers in 15 blocks within Coimbatore district.
