A woman accused of murdering a pub landlord has claimed self-defense, stating that she had threatened to kill him if he touched her daughter.

Stephanie Langley, from East Farleigh, is currently on trial for allegedly stabbing her ex-brother-in-law, Matthew Bryant, three times with a kitchen knife outside the Hare and Hounds in Maidstone, Kent, in September 2023.

Langley denies the charges of murder and manslaughter at Maidstone Crown Court.

Allegations of Abuse

During the trial, Langley alleged that Bryant had a history of abusing women.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, Langley entered the pub and attempted to smash Bryant’s phone, as shown by CCTV footage presented to the jury.

Langley claimed that she accused Bryant of abusing women and believed he should not be allowed to hold a pub license.

The prosecution, however, argued that Langley was the one making threats and that she had been confrontational towards Bryant.

The Confrontation

A confrontation between Langley and Bryant took place outside the pub shortly after 18:00 BST. CCTV footage revealed Langley knocking a phone out of Bryant’s hand.

The prosecution claimed that within approximately 24 seconds, Langley stabbed Bryant three times.

Motives Questioned

During cross-examination, the prosecution questioned Langley’s feelings towards Bryant.

Nina Ellin KC, representing the prosecution, asked Langley if she hated Bryant. Langley responded by saying that he was not someone she liked or wanted to think about.

Langley maintained that she did not make a deliberate decision to kill Bryant but rather lost control in what she described as an “awful, heinous act.”

The trial is ongoing.
