Cedarburg High School Student Wins Back to the BEEach Poster Contest

CEDARBURG — Cedarburg High School senior Maureen Machado has won the poster contest for Back to the BEEach, the spelling bee benefit for the Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County. Her winning design features bees and a beach, capturing the fun and creativity of the annual event.

Students’ Favorite Project

Cedarburg High School Art Department Chair Deb Mortl described the poster contest as one of the students’ favorite projects. It allows them to explore creative challenges and showcase their artistic abilities. In previous years, students have created posters featuring bees in space, over the rainbow, and even back in time to Jay Gatsby’s mansion.

Partnership with ALC

Since 2017, Cedarburg High School graphic design students have been creating posters for the Adult Literacy Center’s annual benefit. Under the guidance of Deb Mortl, students also design materials for other community groups, including the high school and Cedarburg Performing Arts Center. The posters for the spelling bee benefit must incorporate the annual theme, relevant information about the event, and bees into their designs.

Recognition for Maureen’s Design

Maureen’s design was chosen by the benefit committee from a selection of 16 bright, colorful, and creative designs. The committee appreciated the clear and graphic style of her design, which effectively captured the fun and spirit of the event. The Adult Literacy Center’s Executive Director, Amy Schmelzer, expressed their enjoyment in seeing how students interpret the theme and incorporate bees into their designs.
