Clarendon County Adult Education Celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

Clarendon County Adult Education, in partnership with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE), invites you to join us in celebrating National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, which will take place from September 18-22, 2023.

Addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Over 30 million Americans over the age of 25 – or one out of every 9 U.S. citizens – do not have a high school diploma. Clarendon County Adult Education is working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. We had 33 graduates last school year and over 175 people who either tested in GED, Parapro, or WIN/WorkKeys.

The Importance of Adult Education

Research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that job growth for individuals without a high school diploma or some college experience is about zero or even negative. By 2024, 48 percent of job openings will be middle-skill and 32 percent will be high-skill. This means that in less than 3 years, nearly 80 percent of all job openings will require more than a high school degree. Adults who participate in Clarendon County Adult Education have the opportunity to explore career pathways and hone their skills so that they can advance their careers through postsecondary education or training.

Clarendon County Adult Education is open for registration in our daytime and evening programs! We have locations in Manning, Turbeville, and Summerton.

Adult Education and Family Literacy Programs

Adult education and family literacy programs serve adults who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, obtain a high school equivalence degree, and prepare for postsecondary education or training. These programs align with SDG 4 by providing opportunities for lifelong learning and skill development.

Family literacy programs also play a crucial role in breaking the cycles of low literacy, low education, and poverty. These programs serve parents and their young children, teaching basic skills, English as a Second Language, and parenting skills to adults while their children receive high-quality instruction.
