Fort Hays State University Launches Programs to Support Kansas Freshmen

Income-Based Awards (IBA) and Housing Scholarship Program

By FHSU University Communications

Fort Hays State University (FHSU) is proud to introduce two new programs designed to support incoming freshmen from Kansas. Starting in the fall of 2024, FHSU will implement the Income-Based Awards (IBA) program and a $1,500 housing scholarship program for all new full-time Kansas resident freshmen living on campus. These initiatives aim to provide accessible and quality education to all students while empowering the future leaders of Kansas.

About the Housing Scholarship Program

In addition to the IBA program, FHSU will award a $1,500 scholarship to all new Kansas resident freshmen who choose to live in one of the university’s on-campus residence halls. Research shows that students who live on campus during their freshman year have a 6 percent higher retention rate. This scholarship program highlights FHSU’s commitment to supporting student retention and success.

About the Income-Based Awards

Starting in Fall 2024, the IBA program will cover any remaining tuition and fee balance for eligible students after grants and scholarships have been applied. This initiative reflects FHSU’s dedication to breaking down financial barriers and fostering academic success for all students.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the IBA program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a Kansas resident at the time of application for admission.
  2. Be Federal Pell Grant eligible as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  3. Attend FHSU on campus.
  4. Be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (12 credit hours each term) pursuing their first bachelor’s degree.
  5. Have an annual combined family income of $75,000 or less, demonstrated by the Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from the 2022 tax year as reported on the FAFSA.

Program and Funding Details

Eligible students will receive the IBA, which covers tuition and fees. However, the program and awards are subject to state funding and annual availability limitations. FHSU reserves the right to modify the program and individual awards based on changes in state funding.

How to Apply

Students do not need to complete a separate scholarship application form for the IBA program. Interested candidates can apply for the IBA by ensuring they meet the eligibility requirements, completing the FAFSA by the published priority deadline, and applying for admission to FHSU. Once admitted, applicants should also complete their housing contract to secure a spot in one of the on-campus residence halls.
